Today was to be another wonderful day in the desert and it struck us what contrasting natural environments we had experienced during this time exploring Africa. From the magnificent savannahs, lakes and rivers, to dense forests and towering mountains, there was no end to the spectacles we were absorbing on a daily basis. This was the time of the desert.

”Do as the locals do. Eat street food. Take public transportation”.

This day was probably our last full day in Khartoum and we made good use of it. At no time during our stay have we been made to feel like intruders, instead we have been welcomed into Khartoum society with a minimum of fuss. Make no mistake, with the scarcity of other tourists or even pale-skins, we stand out like sore thumbs, but with the innate courtesy of the Sudanese one hardly even notices a sideways glance. There is just the odd “welcome” quietly uttered by a passer-by.

The rapid progress we were making northwards almost beggars belief. We will be slowing down a little now as we have some matters to attend to in Khartoum. These were -:

• Having a 110,000km service on Slow Donkey, plus having the brakes attended to and also replacing one of the front shock absorbers and checking the other. I would be surprised if some of the bushes do not need replacement.
