GEEKS: DAY1. WEEK 1. EAST LONDON (Home) to LICHTENBURG.

DISTANCE TRAVELLED: 910km    TIME TAKEN 11hrs

ROUTE: East London (home) to Lichtenburg.

Details: East London - Queenstown - Bloemfontein - Bultfontein - Bloemhof - Wolmaransstad - Ottosdal - Lichtenburg.

Fuel consumption (allow for my defective maths) 5,6 km/l. I think this is not unexpected considering the heavy load and the long steady climb from sea level to altitude. I must admit to having a bit of a heavy foot today due to the distance we needed to cover.

DAY1. WEEK 1. EAST LONDON (Home) to LICHTENBURG.

Very good start to the journey with a very pleasant 910km joyride today. It was just such a relief to finally get away after years of anticipation and countless months of preparations. No last minute snags at all and we hit the road at 6H15. It was such a pleasure not to have suffered the packing rush and near frenzy that always seemed to happen whilst we were still working. I have never felt more relaxed at the start of a trip before and I was surprised at the absence of last minute nerves.

D-DAY MINUS ONE. 11 April 2015.

Our packing is all but complete. All the equipment is checked, batteries are all fully charged and the vehicle freezers are running via mains and the blue caravan plug-in. All that remains is some shopping for fresh produce and a round of goodbye visits and we will be on the road by 6am tomorrow. The time at hand for preparation since my retirement has been a real luxury, no last minute rushing about and frayed tempers!

D-Day minus One!

I have recieved the most wonderful advice from various people during the planning of our trip. The most useful seemed to emanate from those researching the Southern African legs of their trips whilst on the road from North to South Africa. They seemed to have found my self-drive trip reports helpful and contacted me directly. They then very kindly reciprocated by offering excellent advice for this trip of ours.
